Kanze Hideo (観世栄夫)

Hideo KANZE (August 3, 1927 - June 8, 2007) was a Nohgakushi (Noh actor) playing shite (principal roles) of Kanze-ryu school and an actor. He temporarily transferred to the Kita-ryu school but later came back to the Kanze-ryu school.

Biography and Personal Profile

He was born to the Tetsunojo KANZE family as the second son of the Nohgakushi Gasetsu KANZE, the seventh. He studied under his father, Kasetsu KANZE, Roppeita KITA, Minoru KITA and Tokuzo GOTO. He left the world of Noh in 1958. He appeared in modern plays, movies and dance performances, and in 1979, he went back to Nohgaku (the art of Noh). He also worked as a professor in the Kyoto University of Art and Design. His wife was Emiko, the adopted daughter of Junichiro TANIZAKI (a child by a former marriage of his wife, Matsuko). He once played the role of Tanizaki in a documentary type drama "Shusen no hi no Kafu to Junichiro" (Kafu and Junichiro on the end of the war) (1984, Asahi Broadcasting Corporation). Received Minister of Education Award for Fine Arts in 1997, Mobile music award in 1998 and The Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon in 2001. He died from colorectal cancer at 8:35 AM on June 8, 2007 at the Sumida Chuo Hospital in Sumida Ward, Tokyo Prefecture.
